A simple sentence has no dependent clause or only one independent clause. If such a sentence includes such interjections as and and but, the comma isn’t used.
Also, a comma isn’t used with the subordinating conjunction because, which connects a subordinate clause to an independent clause.

Mr Simpsonfoundthe presentbut decidednot to open it.
She couldn’t make a sandwichbecausethere was no bread in the house.
A compound sentence includes two or more independent clauses linked by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, etc.). Independent clauses can stand alone and have independent meaning. A comma is used before a coordinating conjunction that joins two independent clauses (with different subjects).
Mary bought a house last week, but her parents didn’t approve of her choice.
I would love to go shopping, but I need to clean my room first.
