Freerunning, also known as freerun or parkour, is quite popular with teenagers. It is an activity in which people have to overcome obstacles in a city such as buildings and other objects while performing jumps and other skillful stunts. Freerunners have to overcome these obstacles without any special equipment.
Freerunning was founded by Sebastien Foucan. It originates from parkour, a military-style training. Parkour is a French word. The idea of parkour training is based on the observation that native tribes in Africa have fantastic athletic abilities due to their interaction with their natural environment. In parkour, one has to get from one point to another in the fastest way overcoming complex obstacles without any special equipment. As parkour is close to military disciplines and martial arts, it involves such actions as climbing, swinging, rolling, etc.
However, Foucan wanted to create an activity that was more adapted to each person's individual needs than parkour. Freerunning focuses not on efficiency and speed but the artistry and the individual style of performers. Movements should be fascinating and spectacular.
The main principle of freerunning is freedom. Its core idea is that people should express themselves by moving freely in their environment. There are no boundaries on the form of movements. Freerunners can do such movements as jumping, flipping, and spinning as well as invent their own stunts. Freerun stunts are stunning and often dangerous. Those who practise freerunning know that it is important to think positively. If you think you might fall—you will.
Becoming a freerunner requires training and courage. If you are ready to spend your time and effort on this activity, you will be a success. To begin with, you have to be in shape and have endurance so start with the basic exercises push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and squats. You must also learn how to land and fall safely. Free running requires regular training and drilling your basic techniques before moving on to more difficult movements.
You must also be able to experiment and find your own style and listen to your body. The common movements used by others might turn out useless for you. Nobody knows yourself better than you do.
