I have always been fascinated by ancient history, especially the Roman Empire. Since I was going to be in Naples for a few days, I could not miss the chance to visit Pompeii, the heritage site full of best-preserved examples of Roman urban areas and homes.

Before I talk about the tour, it is worth mentioning that many of the works of art like frescoes, mosaics, and statues that were found during the excavations of Pompeii are now housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples in order to preserve them. I visited the museum the day before my visit to Pompeii and Herculaneum and if you have the time, I highly recommend that you check it out, as it provides a lot more detail and context to what you will see in Pompeii.

On the day of the excursion, I arrived at the meeting point, which was about a five-minute walk from my hotel. I waited about five minutes before I was picked up and greeted by our tour leader Emma. So pleased was I with her punctuality and good manners that I thought about giving her a tip after our adventure. During the half-hour drive to Pompeii, she told us a little about the area, the ruins we'd be visiting, and the volcanic eruption of 79 AD that doomed but also preserved the cities.

Once we arrived, we walked about ten minutes to the entrance into the ruins of Pompeii, where we paid the €15 admission ticket which is not included in the price of the tour. We began the tour of the ruins walking past an area that was used as gladiator barracks and training areas to arrive at our first stop: the theatre. The theatre is incredibly well preserved (it seemed to avoid violent looting and damages during excavation); even some of the marble is still there in ideal condition and the acoustics are perfect, we could even hear our guide easily from the top of the theatre. Then, Emma took us a few streets further to one of the largest villas in Pompeii, where we could really appreciate the outstanding architecture of wealthy Roman homes, surrounded with lush orchards in the past: the entrance atrium, beautifully frescoed walls, intricate floor mosaics, inner courtyards, all still there and fairly well conserved. A few streets from there, we went into the Roman baths. It is amazing how much thought was put into their design and how sophisticated they were despite their limited technology. We walked for a few minutes and reached what was an ancient brothel, with the "menu" of services painted on the walls and the stone beds still intact. We finished our tour by visiting the forum, which had been used by the Pompeii citizens to worship their gods and for administrative purposes as well. Then we had about fifteen minutes of free time to look around on our own and take pictures, after that, we headed out of the remains ready for lunch.
