Questions in reported speech
In reported questions, we use affirmative word order and the question mark is omitted.

E.g. "What are you doing?" she asked. — She asked me what I was doing. (Not She asked me what was I doing?)

To report a question, we use:

  • ask + wh-word ("who", "what", etc.) when the direct question begins with such a word;
  • ask + if/whether when the direct question begins with a verb ("do", "has", "can", etc.)

E.g. She asked, "What are you doing?" (direct speech) — She asked mewhatI was doing (reported speech).

She said, "Areyou going to the gym?" (direct speech) — She asked meif/whetherI was going to the gym (reported speech).
