The Spanish language The Spanish language is one of the Romance languages that came from the Latin language. It is the 1 (commonly) spoken Romance language in the world. When the Western Roman Empire fell apart, the Latin language began to develop in 6 (differ) ways in various provinces. The Latin spoken in the Iberian peninsula developed first into Ibero-Romance language in the 6th century. Castilian and Portuguese became separate languages in the 12th century. The Catalan language is not a dialect of Spanish. It is more closely related to 7 (France) than to Spanish. In parts of northern Spain and 8 (South) France, people speak the Basque language.
