Amelia Earhart
Amelia Earhart was a US pilot who disappeared mysteriously during one of her flights. This strange tragedy continues to intrigue people nowadays.
Born in Kansas, USA in 1897, Amelia refused to agree to the stereotypes of her time about how boys and girls should behave differently. As a young girl, she enjoyed playing sports, climbing trees, and playing outdoors with her sister.
Amelia's interest in flying began in 1920 when she flew as a passenger during a visit to an airfield in Long Beach, California with her father. The following year, she started to take flying lessons; her first lesson was given by Anita Snook, another pioneer female aviator.
Amelia got her pilot's licence in 1921 and continued setting records. She became the first woman to fly on her own across the Atlantic Ocean and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by the US Congress. In 1932, Amelia made a solo flight across the US – another first for a woman – and she also became the first person to fly alone from Hawaii to mainland USA.
Moreover, Amelia worked hard to promote opportunities for women in aviation, which had traditionally been seen as a male field. She became the first president of 'the Ninety Nines', an organisation founded in 1929 to promote the development of aviation and to inspire more women to become pilots.
In 1936, Amelia planned even bigger records and started to prepare for a round the world flight. Her first attempt was made in March 1937, but the journey had to be cancelled due to technical difficulties. Amelia made her second attempt in June 1937, and in a month she had reached New Guinea in her plane, the Electra. On July 2, Amelia left New Guinea together with her second pilot, Fred Noonan, and they started their way to Howland Island. It is an island in the Pacific Ocean about 1,500 miles away from New Guinea.
A Coast Guard ship was stationed by the coast of Howland Island and waited for Earhart's arrival in order to help her with the landing. Suddenly, they lost radio contact with Amelia. The Electranever landed on Howland Island or in any other place. In spite of numerous searches using ships and planes, no trace of the Amelia was ever found.
A lot of theories have been created about the tragic disappearance. The theories include the plane running out of fuel, Amelia losing her direction and landing on an uninhabited island, Amelia and her navigator being caught and sent to prison by the Japanese after the crash of their plane, and many others. While the circumstances of her death may never be known, the legacy of her life is easy to understand: Amelia Earhart pushed boundaries and followed her dreams, she inspired women to choose their careers themselves and achieve their goals.
