Leisure Preferences
I was born and raised in a big city. There are absolutely no problems here in terms of finding something to do at your leisure. My city is famous for its beautiful architecture, inexplicable charm and a large number of establishments for all tastes. Children's clubs, hobby clubs, vintage shops, various workshops for children and adults, cafes and restaurants, malls, parks, museums and lecture halls, libraries and universities—I have listed only what came to mind first.
As a child, I spent my free time mostly at home. The school was quite busy, so on weekdays I only had time for school, lessons and cartoons in the afternoon. However, it is worth noting that it was a difficult time then. After the 90s, everyone around was afraid to leave children unattended and let them go outside. But over time, this fear passed.
Several times a year, my mum and dad took my sister and me to various events. Concerts, holidays, performances and even a ballet for children. In general, we have never been bored. Twice a week my sister and I went to the pool and twice a week I went to private English lessons. On weekends, my mother and I went to courses at the museum. There we were shown the exposition of the museum and told a lot about art and history. Thanks to these courses, I really fell in love with Ancient Greece mythology and in my free time I read many books on this topic. I was especially fascinated by the stories about the Amazons.
In high school, I started spending more time on the Internet and became interested in contemporary music. Sometimes I went to concerts of my favourite bands with friends, and once my dad and I went to a concert in honour of Amy Winehouse in a tiny club in the city centre. I started spending time with my friends. We went to take pictures, visited each other, walked around the city, and organised holidays. While there was some time before exams, we tried to have fun and enjoy the freedom. My classmates were into sports, but I could only run or watch the girls play volleyball.Before the exams, there was almost no leisure time left and we were all immersed in study and preparation for exams. But reading books and watching films came into fashion again. This was our outlet. My sister and I went to the cinema almost every month, and we collected tickets and booklets for the films we had just watched.While studying at the university, I met a lot of girls from other cities, with different backgrounds, hobbies and stories. Everyone loved to read and we discussed our literary preferences. At the same time, interest in films gradually faded away, but the popularity of the series increased dramatically. And for almost 10 years now, TV series are still more popular than films. In my opinion, the point is that films usually contain a lot of events and the viewer spends a lot of energy and emotions watching the film. While in TV series, the development of the plot and characters is smooth and even. The viewer is gradually emotionally invested in watching and can stop at any moment, take a break and return to it later.
In addition to all this, my friends from the university and I began to attend more parties and different cafes or bars. In this way, I discovered an incredible variety of gastronomic cultures. Even now, I cannot live a week without going to some coffee shop or bakery. Thus, not only do I satisfy my hunger but also get a lot of positive emotions from communicating with people.
Now after graduating from university, but still remaining among the youth, in my free time I do a little bit of everything that I did before. I try to visit museums, exhibitions and performances at least a few times a year. I read different books and watch TV series, which I then discuss with my friends. I also volunteer on weekends. I play with children diagnosed with autism. My friends and I don't throw parties often, but we enjoy spending time together. I try to go to concerts of my favourite performers, but recently practically no one performs live. I spend even more time on the Internet than I used to, but now I consume both entertainment and educational content.
