How to Start Living on Your Own

When you enter a college or a university, your life changes greatly. There are new people and new experiences waiting for you. Moreover, a lot of young people have to face the challenge of living on their own. Some feel really excited about it and are looking forward to getting out of their parents’ control. Others feel uneasy and sad to leave the comfort of their home. Here are some tips that might make the start of your independent living more successful and pleasant.

First of all, think carefully about the place where you are going to live. Students usually have to choose between living in a dormitory and renting a flat. There are certain advantages and disadvantages of living in a dormitory. If you choose to live in a dormitory, you find yourself in the centre of the students’ life. You know about all the activities that are going on and it is easier for you to make friends on the campus. Establishing social connections and communication with peers is an essential point for a first-year student.

However, living in a dormitory also means the necessity to establish a relationship with your roommates who might turn out to be rather unpleasant people. You might have to learn how to live with people whose lifestyle is absolutely different from yours. If you are a quiet, shy, and diligent person, you are hardly likely to be happy with a sociable roommate who adores having daily parties and loads of friends in the room you share and doesn’t care about studies. It is efficient social training, though, as we seldom have the chance to be surrounded only by the people we like.

Living in a rented flat means greater freedom and greater responsibility that inevitably comes with it. You do not have to follow the dormitory rules but that just means you must set strict rules for yourself. It is very tempting to start doing what you want as there is no one to stop you and say you mustn’t do this and that. Your parents are not here to say that this new boyfriend of yours is not the best partner for you. There is no one to tell you not to stay out late and to control your every step. But you must remember to resist temptations as a careless lifestyle might cause great problems.A lot of young people rent a flat with a friend or an acquaintance. In this case, they might face the problem of sharing expenses and household chores. To avoid conflicts, you have to discuss such issues before you come to live together. Most often you share the expenses evenly. However, if one of you has some extra conveniences and facilities such as an air conditioner or a private bathroom in their room, you’d better take that into consideration when splitting the expenses.

Household chores are a common source of arguments, so it is necessary to discuss the matter beforehand. Living on your own in a flat means that you have to do the vacuuming and the washing-up, clean the bathroom and the toilet, do the cooking, and take out the garbage. You can agree to have a schedule. You can divide the tasks according to days of the week or personal preferences. If your friend loves cooking and you do not get on well even with a multicooker, then it is just reasonable to let your friend do all the cooking and agree to clean the rooms instead.

No matter whether you live in a dormitory or a rented flat, you will start missing your family. Fortunately, nowadays it’s easy to stay in touch through social media. Share the photos of your student life with your family, skype them in the evening, and remember they love you and care for you. They will be happy to know you are safe and comfortable in your new life. So the best thing you can do is to take care of yourself.
