Match the functions of the modal verbs to the examples
Modal verbs:
- don't take -s, -ing or -ed affixes;
- are followed by the bare infinitive;
- don't need any auxiliaries (except have to).
Modals of Ability
| Ability in the present (ability to do something in a particular moment) | I multiply numbers before we actually studied how to do it at school. |
| Ability in the past (general abilities) | On holiday, we get up early only because of a grandad. |
| Ability in the past (achieving something on a specific occasion) | My brother is taking guitar classes now. Next year he participate in a competition. |
| Ability in the future | I feel so good today! I think I do anything! |
| Ability in the present (general ability) | I play the violin quite well. |
Modals of Inability
| Inability in the present | I complete the Maths test yesterday because of a headache. |
| Inability in the past (specific occasion in the past) | Bob speak foreign languages. |
| Inability in the past (general inabilities and specific occasions) | When seven months old, Bob speak. |
