Mardi Gras Carnival
Every January before Lent, the city of New Orleans is crowded with hundreds of people celebrating one of the most fascinating carnivals in the world called Mardi Gras.
Mardi Gras is a festival of music, parades, floats and excitement.
Merrymakers from all over the world come to New Orleans to experience all forms of entertainment. You can take part in Mardi Gras balls, be showered with colourful beads that krewe members on floats throw to parade-goers, sit on the ground, play music, eat great food and watch the crowds walk by between parades!
The festival frequenters are sure to wear crazy costumes and adorn themselves with long beads from previous parades.
Mardi Gras could hardly be imagined without "krewes", clubs staging a parade or a ball during the carnival season. There are over 50 krewes in New Orleans.
According to the tradition of "beads and throws", the "krewes" throw home-made trinkets, beads of all shapes, doubloons, cups and toys into the crowd. Experienced revellers take a big bag to haul away all the baubles they catch from the parade.
