Long time ago,
when there were no fridges at homes,
people were buying
a small amount of necessary foods day by day.
Of course, they were trying to keep food fresh.
But that was not simple without electricity.
Rich people used special boxes with ice in them.
The food in the ice stayed cold for some time.
Most houses were built with cellars
(they are little cold rooms under the floor).
People used to leave some of their food in a cellar
and the food wouldn't spoil.
Some products could stay fresh longer
when people put them in cold water.
But mostly in those days,
food was preserved by smoking it,
salting it, or drying it.
As for the first fridge,
for many families it became a great new thing only in 1927.

  1. Before the fridge appeared in the kitchens, people
[ ] buy lots of food.
  2. Rich people
    [ ] have ice boxes.
  3. Food
[ ] stay fresh in dark and cool cellars.
  4. Some housewifes
[ ] put products in cold water.
  5. People
[ ] salt and dry their food.

What would your day be like without the Internet? Just think of those times when people met friends and colleagues every day and had to ask hard questions face-to-face. Students went to the library and read heavy paper books. There was no Google to give them the answers to a biology test. Young people were regularly visiting small music shops to buy the hottest new CD albums or cassettes, because they had no idea of what "download" is. When travelling, people had to use paper maps to get from point A to point B. They didn't have smartphones to tell them exactly where to go. People were more careful to speak negatively about things. It is so much easier now to hurt a person's feelings when you are an anonymous profile.

  1. Before the internet came to our lives, people
    [ ] meet more often.
  2. Students
    [ ] google their homework.
  3. Music lovers
[ ] buy new cassettes and CDs.
  4. People
[ ] read paper maps when travelling.
  5. They
    [ ] have helpful smartphones.
  6. People

Before the

the Internet

I remember, when I was a child, we had a radio set / a player and a lot of big black discs with records of popular music ...

I remember my grandmother told about the way she used to wash clothes. She did it on a wooden washboard ...

Let's think what made us happy or sad when we were kids.

Example

  • And what about you? Did you use to have pets when you were a kid?
  • Did you use to be a troublemaker at your teen age?

Eva Longoria has got three elder sisters. Although their mother and father are Mexicans by origin, the three elder girls are blue-eyed blondes. Eva used to think she was an adopted daughter because of her brown eyes, dark skin and hair. The family was living at a ranch and the girls used to bring every outdoor cat home, where Eva's mom helped to look after the animals.

Al Pacino used to be a desperate teen troublemaker. He even dropped out of school at the age of 17. After an argument with his mother he left home. Long before building a career of a film director he used to focus on baseball as his future job. When Alfredo got interested in acting, he started working as a postman, then, a waiter and a cleaner, just to earn more money for the drama training.
