Let's now learn some basic parts of a vessel. Look at the picture and label it with the words.

  • a hull /hʌl/ — the body of a ship
  • a funnel /ˈfʌnl/ — a smokestack consisting of a shaft for ventilation or the passage of smoke
  • a propeller /prəˈpɛlə/ — a mechanical device that rotates to push against air or water
  • a bow /baʊ/ — the front part of a ship
  • a bridge — a special platform on an upper deck of a ship where the captain and officers direct operations
  • a stern /stɜːn/ — the rear part of a ship
  • an afterdeck — an open deck toward the stern of a ship.
  • a bulwark /ˈbʊlwək/ — an extension of a ship's sides above the level of the deck
  • an ensign /ˈɛnsʌɪn/ — a flag used to indicate nationality
  • an anchor /ˈæŋ.kər/ — a heavy metal object that is dropped from a ship into the water to prevent it from moving away
  • a hawsehole /ˈhɔːzhəʊl/ — a hole in the deck of a ship through which an anchor cable passes
  • a scuttle /ˈskʌt(ə)l/ — an opening with a cover in a ship's deck or side
  • a foredeck — the forward part of the deck of a ship, usually the main deck
  • a keel — the long piece of wood or metal along the bottom of a boat that forms part of its structure and helps to keep the boat balanced in the water

Complete the definitions with the words
