SarahMatthewIt is difficult for me to understand
what tolerance is being defined as these days.
Nowadays, everyone claims to be tolerant;
yet we are all to some extent subjected to cancel culture.
Aren't you a bit harsh in your thinking?
There is a vast difference
between healthy criticism and cancel culture.
There is nothing wrong with critical thinking;
it is the latter that may cause controversy,
but also then, there might be a very reasonable explanation
why a certain person is called out.
Cancel culture focuses on pushing out
individuals or groups from social circles.
A person gets ostracised usually as a result of,
by general consensus considered,
inappropriate or controversial behaviour,
such as anti-semitism,
sexist or racist statements in social media.
Do you remember JK Rowling
who got cancelled for the tweet that was seen as transphobic?
First, it was trans-activists who labelled her;
then leading Harry Potter actors came out against her.
Now, former Potter fans are arguing
about whether it is still "acceptable" to enjoy the books...
In modern times, people in a society
tend to have similar backgrounds
and share many of the same norms and values,
goals and religion.
People with a similar heritage are often in agreement
when it comes to what it means to be a moral person
and leading a decent life.
If you abide by these rules,
you do not have to worry
about becoming a victim of the cancel culture.
But then, there is this movement called "pluralism".
How does that fit into the story?
Correct me if I'm wrong,
but isn't pluralism about showing understanding
and adopting the idea that different people,
religions and beliefs can coexist together
because the society benefits
and thrives from its diversity.
Many of the acclaimed men and women
who have changed the world and dramatically improved
it have been living examples of pluralism.
They were often people
who came from extremely diverse backgrounds,
and this diversity made them stand out,
which led to their uniqueness.
In my opinion,
pluralistic thinking naturally nourishes innovation
and encourages progress
because a society that has adopted a pluralistic outlook
tends to share their ideas and belief system,
allowing the whole society to evolve.
Cancel culture
is very much the modernised suppression of pluralism,
as society unites with this "cancellation"
against any violations
that might be harmful to humanity.
I absolutely agree with you
that societies should welcome people from diverse backgrounds,
but they should be cautious
when welcoming new ideas and beliefs,
as some of those may be considered offensive
or even prove to be harmful to their particular culture.
I reckon that diversity in society
brings about growth, which is a necessity.
I personally believe
that, if we adopt a healthy degree of tolerance,
we need not always agree
but rather seek understanding
and learn to be tolerant of different philosophies,
which may, in turn, give rise to a more peaceful
and therewith flourishing society.
I am glad we see eye to eye on this.
