Ways to prevent a global problem
Bullying is not childish pranks or normal. It can cause serious psychological harm to school children. Now the harassment has moved online. In order to find effective ways to put an end to cyberbullying is to understand why it happens. Teenagers usually hide what they do in the cyberworld. Most of the time parents do not know that their child is a victim until it is too late. Parents of course want to give a helping hand to their children. The first and best thing for them to do, when their child comes to them about being trolled and humiliated, is to actually listen to them.
All online accounts should be private, and teenagers should not be connected to anyone they do not personally know. Mobile phones should also be private. Teenagers of course will text many people. Phone numbers can be passed around to everyone in the school. Teenagers should be advised if they share personal information and photos, they could be sending them to everyone. Cyberbullies can use personal information as a way to harass and shame someone. When someone is threatening you, report it immediately to the social media platform. All modern social media has rules against cyberbullying and stalking.
Cyberbullies thrive on the responses of their victims. The best thing you can do is not respond; just block the bully. This may not stop them from continuing their harassment, however, save the evidence and report them. The more evidence you have, the more help you can receive from teachers or the police. Cyberstalking and harassment are now a crime which is punishable by law in many countries. The punishments can be anywhere from expulsion from school to fines and jail time. Parents should remember to listen and work with their children about the situation and respond to them openly and calmly. It will always be about the context of the situation when bullying happens. Most bullying comes from school life, and the teachers can intervene and give a helping hand if the child cannot tell a parent first.
If you witness someone else getting bullied, do not stay silent. Being a bystander empowers the bully online just as it does in real life. You can take screenshots and report the cyberbully to the social media platform. If a friend tells you that they are being harassed, then you can report it to the school or another trusted adult. Always remember you can report cyberbullying anonymously. This is a way to stop the bully, and it also sends a strong message that the bully has no true power. Bullies want to control and overpower because they are usually insecure and enjoy watching the results of their cyberattacks. Bullying can also be a learned behavior from the adults that live with them.
The online world is here to stay, where even in modern times it is hard to filter and censor what is said and done. The classic signs of bullying are threats, intimidation, lies, and insults, all these things still can be said and texted to someone. Cyberbullying is the same as it is in real life, it is a power imbalance between people. Teenagers can get together with trusted friends and loved once, to facilitate their relationships. Creating strong bonds will make it harder for cyberbullies to isolate someone to be their victim this way.
