Usage of can
We use can say that something is possible or permitted, or that somebody has the ability to do something. We use can + infinitive (can do / can see etc.):
You can see the river from our windows.
"I forgot my ruler." "You can take mine."
Can you speak English?
I can visit you tomorrow.
The negative form of "сan" is can't / cannot:
I'm can't swim.
Usage of could in the past
Could is the past form of can. We use could especially with these words:
see, hear, smell, taste, feel, remember, understand
We could see the river.
I could smell cologne.
I couldn't hear your words.
We also use could say that somebody had the ability or permission to do something:
My grandmother could speak foreign languages.
We finished our work. We could do something interesting.
- When Daisy was 3, she [ ] read.
- She doesn't know any notes. She [ ] play the piano.
- When my grandmother was younger, she [ ] run so fast.
- I [ ] drive a car when I was 10.
- Every ballerina [ ] jump very high.
- Cats [ ] fly, but they [ ] swim.
