Complete the sentences with the punctuation marks
Colons
Colons (:) are used when we introduce a long list.
Example: There are many ecological problems in the world: global warming, deforestation, destruction of animal habitats, etc.
Sometimes such phrases as "such as", "for example", "as follows", "in the following examples", "for instance" precede the list.
Example: The tool kit included the following items: scissors, skewers, a wrench, a hammer, and a screwdriver.
Secondly, colons are used after the main clause if the following statement illustrates the contents of the main clause. In this case the colon substitutes the phrase "that is" and may be replaced by a semi-colon or a full stop.
Example: The garden was empty: all the trees were cut down.
Colons can be also used when we introduce someone's words without quotations marks.
Example: Mr Wilson is always saying: everybody chooses his or her own path to achieve success.
