A. Have you ever seen "Beethoven"? No, it is not a movie about one of the greatest composers ever born, but about... a dog. Beethoven was the name of a huge St Bernard, and he was shown as a kind and a bit of a phlegmatic dog in the film. But is it really so?

B. St Bernard is a large dog that was bred out in the Swiss Alps as a rescuer. The breed was put into Guinness World Records three times! It is not a calm and phlegmy pet but a bold creature that saves lives. It was used in the mountains: St Bernards wandered around cliffs and peaks searching for frostbitten people. Thick fur warmed the dogs' bodies, so they would not get cold in these conditions. Since their breeding, St Bernards have saved thousands of lives.

C. St Bernard is a rather big dog. Its height is 65–90 cm, and it weighs around 70 kg. Like many dogs of large size, they are not long-livers: because of serious strains on their hearts, they live about 8–10 years. They can be two types—short- and long-haired. Long coats of the latter ones help them to reach mountain summits without any problems. They find the crippled people in the snow and warm them with their bodies and fur.

D. Why does the dog have such a name? Without knowing it, we could suppose that the breed was obtained by St Bernard himself. However, it is untrue. St Bernard lived about 600 years earlier than the dog appeared. But the Swiss monks who lived in the monastery of St Bernard sheltered travellers that came there. A dangerous path led to that beautiful place. It was full of robbers. Avalanches and strong winds were a common occurrence there. And we remember that there was no electricity, so pitch black nights were also a problem.

E. There are many incredible tales about St Bernards finding frozen people under a thick coat of snow. They also helped the monks to carry their loads through irresistible routes. Against all odds, people reached their destinations safe and sound due to their faithful four-legged companions. These dogs had a great intuition for avalanches and warned their owners or other people about them. One of the most well-known St Bernards is Barry, who saved about 40 people. There is a memorial to Barry carrying a little boy he saved from imminent death. It is situated in France. And monks, who live in the monastery of St Bernard, are still breeding the dogs, and one of the males in a litter gets a name after the legendary Barry.
