Strategy

  1. Read the text through once.
  2. Look at the parts of sentences 1–7.
  3. Read the paragraph that contains the first gap and look for clues:
    • Are there any reference words to help you?
    • Is there a linking word before or after the gap?
  4. Look for a clause that changes or continues the 'flow'.
  5. When you've decided on the appropriate clause, check that it fits grammatically and follows the sense of the text.

Useful tips

  • Remember, there is an extra clause there — just to confuse you!
  • Pay attention to the words before and after the gap and punctuation.
  • It is important to be able to follow the 'flow' of a text and to understand how parts of a text are connected.

It is a well-known fact that family traditions are vital because they help to unite people. A family is a nucleus of society, so having plenty of cohesive families is a criterion for building a A_____. Traditions strengthen a family.

Every family has its own traditions and customs. In Russia, it is B\_\_\_\_\_ to gather relatives for a holiday event. For instance, people visit their parents, grandparents, or aunts with uncles on birthdays, New Year parties, Easter, and many other holidays.

Russian people have a passion for all kinds of berries — and there is a widespread tradition in Russia to get together for picking berries and mushrooms. Many folk fairy tales tell the children how important it is to be hard-working and help adult relatives. There are plenty of stories under the authorship of Soviet and Russian writers, as well.

Bringing up hard-working children is another tradition of Russia. One of the brightest examples is a fairy tale by a Soviet writer Valentin Kataev "Pipe and Jug". In this story, a girl named Zhenya goes with her family to pick strawberries. She meets a dwarf who finds she is idle and teaches E_____. In the end, Zhenya comes back to her parents with a jug full of strawberries.
