The foundations of modern attitudes towards children in British families were laid in the era of Queen Victoria who reigned from 1837 until her death in 1901. Victorian parents were very strict with their children as strict upbringing was considered to be the only way to make a child become a decent person. The main rule that children were to learn from a young age was that they should be seen and not heard.

Upper- and middle-class families had nannies, and children spent most of their time in the nursery with them. Being under the supervision of their nanny, and later their governess or tutor, the children of the Victorian era saw little of their parents. They were brought to their parents in the evening to wish them good night. Needless to say, Victorian children perceived their parents as deities.
