Strategies and useful tips
- Recommended time to fulfil is 10 minutes!
- First thing you need to do is to read the titles very carefully and translate them. Try to keep them in mind while doing the task.
- You don't need to read all the texts very carefully. Your aim is to understand the main idea.
- Most often key information can be found in the very first and last sentences of the texts.
- The heading must be the one that best covers the main topic, so you need to make sure that the heading you have chosen fits the meaning of the whole mini text and doesn't just simply use some of the same words.
- Very often you will not find the same words in the texts and titles, so pay attention to synonyms.
- If necessary highlight the keywords in the texts.

A. This place is said to be the coldest on Earth. The recorded temperature varies from minus 42 degrees Celsius down to minus 100 degrees. The snow covers the territory of 284,000 square miles from September to May which does not let any gardens or woodland grow. It lies behind the International Dateline, bordering the Bering Strait.
B. Anadyr, the capital of Chukotka, is the administrative centre of the region. The town is situated on a large cape in the mouth of the Anadyr River. Tundra occupies the territories beyond the town. The population is nearly 13,000 people. It is the easternmost city of Russia.
C. The living conditions are harsh because of the severe climate. Spring and summer last a mere 8 weeks. As the temperatures are very low, schools can be closed for a month or so. Doing sports activities outdoors is possible only in summer. The supermarkets are full of different goods but prices are very high.
D. Chukotka natural resources are oil, gas, coal, gold, tungsten, quicksilver. The territory of the region is rich in water resources. There are more than 8000 mountain rivers. The main rivers are the Anadyr, Omolon, Velikaya, Amguema, Bolshoi and Maly Anyui. The rural population is involved in reindeer herding, hunting and fishing. People in towns are employed in mining, construction, education and medicine.
E. The tourism industry is based on cruises and ethno-tourism. Travelling by waterways is a popular activity among foreigners. The nature of Chukotka is very beautiful, such water activities as kayaking and boating are possible only in summer. Water cruises include visiting unique natural sites: the Whale Alley, Lorin hot springs, ethnographic places on Nunyamo and Dezhnev capes.
F. Unfortunately, the transport system is poor. The main means of transport are the sea and the air. The paved roads are available only in the towns and big villages. In winter, when it is extremely cold, the roads are constructed on frozen rivers. The main airport is near Anadyr. As for the railways, there are none.
G. The indigenous people of Chukotka, Chukchi, still live on the territory of the region. In prehistoric times the Chukchi were nomads hunting polar bears, reindeer and marine mammals. Today they still continue to live a nomadic lifestyle in yarangas which are cone-shaped reindeer-hide tents. Today almost 100 % of them are literate and fluent in the Russian language.
