Vladimir Ivanovich Dal (1801–1872) was a great Russian lexicographer.

He devoted 48 years of his life to collecting Russian words, proverbs and sayings. The result of this titanic work was the creation of the "Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language". This dictionary is a real treasure of Russian words. It consists of four volumes. It explains the meaning of about 200,000 words. Dal's dictionary is a kind of encyclopedia of folk culture. His work is rightly called "a work worthy of occupying one of the most honourable places in the annals of Russian science".

Another remarkable work of Dal is the book "Proverbs of the Russian People" published in 1862. It contains more than 30,000 proverbs and sayings.
