The Solar System is one of the planetary systems existing in the universe. There are eight planets in it. The Sun, the centre of the system, is surrounded by the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They are bound to the Sun by gravity. Besides the planets, there are numerous moons, millions of asteroids and comets.

Scientists believe that nearly five billion years ago a giant cloud of dust and gas collapsed and began to form our solar system's main star and planets. The planets of the Solar System originated from meteorites or pieces of space rock travelling around the system for years. The Earth, the third planet and our home, orbits at the ideal distance from the Sun to have liquid water and thus, is the best place to live. It is one of the rockiest planets in the solar system and its surface is covered with 71 % of water.

As for Pluto, which used to be the ninth planet, there is a contradiction between scientists to define it as a dwarf planet. Pluto lost its status in 2006 because it had not cleared its neighbourhood of space objects.
