In the Middle Ages life focused around the village. The village usually belonged to a manor run by a landlord, landlady or someone who came from a noble family. Most peasants never left the village during their life. Most of the people worked on their land. The greatest number of villagers worked their land with horses or oxen, sometimes they used both of them. But not all villagers farmed. There were blacksmiths, potters and all-around handymen.

There also were free peasants. Like others, they lived in the village but owned their land and did not need to provide any service to the lord of the manor. The lord also owed services to the villagers. The lord provided the villagers with a mill, a bakery, a court of justice and protection. The lord also allowed the peasants to use the land to pasture their pigs. Peasants and lords depended on each other providing something the other needed.
