Boris Volynov was born in the Siberian city of Irkutsk on December 18, 1934. When he was a small boy, his parents Valentin Spiridonovich and Evgeniya Izrailyevna moved to Kuzbass town of Prokopyevsk, where he spent his childhood and youth. In 1952 Volynov got a school certificate. In 1955 he graduated from the VAUL (higher aviation school of pilots) in Stalingrad. In 1960 he was selected for the first cosmonaut squad of the USSR. In 1960 he was one of the first 20 pilots selected for space flights. Boris Valentinovich went on his first space flight on January 15, 1969 as a crew commander along with A. Yeliseyev and E. Khrunov on Board the Soyuz-5 spacecraft. The next day, the world's first manned Soyuz-4 and Soyuz-5 spacecraft docked. Khrunov and Yeliseyev went into space and switched to Soyuz-4. The second orbital expedition happened 7 years later. The work was carried out within the secret Soviet program ‘Almaz’. While on board, cosmonauts took experiments on growing crystals and pumping fuel, which helped in the completion of the proton cargo ships. The biological program included observing the behavior of fish. In the following years Boris Volynov worked as an instructor. He retired in 1990. He lives with his wife in Star city (Zvyozdny gorodok).
