Strategies and useful tips

Recommended time to fulfil is 10 minutes!

First thing you need to do is to read the titles very carefully and translate them. Try to keep them in mind while doing the task.

You don't need to read all the texts very carefully. Your aim is to understand the main idea.

Most often key information can be found in the very first and last sentences of the texts.

The heading must be the one that best covers the main topic, so you need to make sure that the heading you have chosen fits the meaning of the whole mini text and doesn't just simply use some of the same words.

Very often you will not find the same words in the texts and titles, so pay attention to synonyms.

If necessary, highlight the keywords in the texts.

Remember! There is one extra title that you do not use.

Thanksgiving Day

A.The pilgrims reached Plymouth on frosty November days and did not have time to make preparations. The first winter in the new place turned out to be very cruel and harsh for the arrivals. Many of them starved to death. This would have continued in the future if the local Indians had not helped the settlers to harvest and taught them the wisdom of life on the new land. It is believed that the grateful pilgrims shared dinner with the Indians. In honour of this event, in the fall of 1621, the very first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated.

B.The country's first president, George Washington, celebrated Thanksgiving on November 26 every year. Later, in 1864, Lincoln changed this date to the last Thursday in November, and a little later, in 1939, Roosevelt moved it to the penultimate Thursday of the month which led to disagreements between the states. And only in 1941, the US Congress at the legislative level secured the date of the celebration for the fourth Thursday of November. It was done, so that people, taking a day off on Friday, would have at their disposal four days off, during which pre-Christmas purchases were made.

C.Of course, the most important symbol of the holiday is the uttering of words of gratitude which can be interpreted very widely. It can be gratitude to the Almighty for mercies, to the Indians who helped the first settlers to survive the past year for the harvest, relatives and friends for support and help or simply personal gratitude of each person for all the good things that happened to him this year.

D.On this day, American families strive to get together to share a meal with each other, consisting of dishes that were on tables in the distant 17th century. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, on Thanksgiving Day, they offer thanks to the pilgrim fathers—the first American settlers and the closest ancestors are the parents, so everyone tries to visit them as well as grandparents and say warm words to their families. And secondly, this holiday is a way of expressing gratitude to family and friends for help, support and good neighbourly relations. In addition, a traditional dinner at a festive table with a specific set of dishes helps to feel unity with each other.

E.First of all, on the festive table, there is a stuffed turkey with cranberry sauce. There is a legend on this account. Queen Elizabeth was eating a roast goose when she was told that an enemy Spanish armada had sunk en route to England. To celebrate, the queen ordered another goose, and since then the goose has become the favourite holiday dish of the British. The colonists replaced it with a turkey at the first festive dinner since there were simply no geese there. Since then, turkey and Thanksgiving have been inseparable. It is no coincidence that the colloquial name of this holiday is Turkey Day.

F.Pumpkin pie is traditionally used as a dessert as a symbol of the autumn harvest. For many peoples, the pumpkin is considered a symbol of fertility, home and prosperity. Although it is believed that the modern pie is an adapted version of the dessert at the first dinner. After all, the Pilgrim Fathers ate just pumpkin with honey and syrup since they did not have flour to bake a pie.

G.One of the fun parts of the holiday is parades, the most grandiose of which takes place in New York. This parade has been organised by the large Macy's department store since 1927. Its distinctive feature is inflatable toys: these can be heroes of cartoons, fairy tales, TV shows or comics. The parade symbolises the start of the Christmas season and sales. Traditionally, the day ends with an evening fireworks display.
