Strategies and useful tips

It's not necessary to hear and understand every word that's spoken. You need to understand the general meaning of a text.

All six speakers have a common topic. You need to find the peculiarities of each statement, each extract.

Read the seven statements. Point out the details that you have to listen for (keywords).

As you listen for the first time, note for each speaker anything which will help to fix them in your mind (age, gender) and any words/phrases that correspond to what you're listening for.

Remember that the extracts may contain distracting information so you should listen to the whole piece before you make a decision. Don't decide too quickly. The word "but" may be the most important word in the recording!

My parents think that my future profession should be connected with medicine. I have three generations of doctors in my family, and my parents are doctors too. As for me, I am not eager to follow in their footsteps. I understand that a good doctor should be very responsible and hard-working with a great wealth of knowledge. I am not good at school and my marks in Chemistry and Biology, which are the key subjects, are not good as well. I am inclined to art and design, so perhaps I will consider being an artist or a sculptor when I leave school.

My choice of a future profession is inspired by the trends that we are experiencing today. I mean the internet. People use the internet every day and it has become a significant part of their lives. We shop online, work and communicate on the internet. So, I am thinking of becoming a part of it. I am keen on new apps and programs that make our lives easier, so, why not start programming? I am sure my efforts will be rewarding if I feel that I have helped people with my project.

Speaker C

I am among those teenagers who are not sure what profession to take. The problem is that there are so many opportunities around me but I don't want to take any of them. I think a job is not that important in life. It is more important to be happy. Of course, you will need money to live on and have to get a job, but the race to get a better position or promotion is not my cup of tea. For me, it is enough to jump from one permanent job to another and not to think about all those troubles. Get your salary, even if it is small, and that's it. Relax and enjoy yourself, someone will help in any case.

I have always dreamt of becoming a primary school teacher. I have a little sister and taking care of her gives me a lot of pleasure! I am teaching her to read, write and count, and it is great to see how she does her best to succeed. My parents say that I have good organisational skills, patience and creative imagination which will help me manage classes and deal with challenging behaviours at school. So this year I am applying for a university to get a teacher's degree .

The job market today offers a lot of opportunities for people of different ages and social statuses. My grandma has decided to take up a new job though she will be 74 this year. She would like to be a culinary blogger on one of the websites focusing on selling healthy food. The idea is to record videos of how she cooks and post them on the website. And know what? She successfully went through all the stages of a recruitment process and was eventually employed. Is the internet job only for youngsters? No way!

Choosing a future profession is not an easy matter. So that is the reason why I am thinking about it now when I am in the 10th grade. There are so many career prospects around and I need to think about it in advance. First, I need to go through some career guidance courses where the specialists will help me choose the direction that suits me best. Secondly, I need to observe what programs universities offer their entrants. I hope these measures will help me to choose a better path in my professional life.
