Disappearing Jobs

Technology is moving so fast now that in a few years many jobs will become outdated or disappear completely. Here is the list of five professions that are likely to be replaced by automation.

Probably the most unwanted job nowadays is a cashier. The development of a cashless society has threatened the profession that has been one of the most popular. Many years ago a cashier was a person who was more than just a worker at a counter, it was a psychologist and a friend. Today self-service tills and stations are commonly used in supermarkets and fast-food restaurants, so the demise of the cashier seems inevitable.

Number two in the list of disappearing professions is a travel agent. You don't need to visit a travel agency to book a holiday or buy plane tickets. Anybody can arrange their own holiday through the Internet, having a few hours of free time and a bank card. Many travel operators are closing down their branches to put their efforts into online offers.

Automatisation of the banking industry has made the profession of a bank teller outdated too. The convenience and user-friendly nature of online and telephone banking help ordinary people make their transactions easily without visiting a bank branch. Haven't you seen numerous smart cash machines in the offices? Today they do much more than a bank teller does and the risk of a mistake is near zero. Perhaps, this profession will be substituted by financial advisors or experts, so banks will remain open.

The era of taxi aggregators has put dispatchers or call centre operators on the edge of extinction. Popular mobile apps have become mainstream and people don't need the help of call centres to take a taxi. The human workforce has been already replaced by software and online mapping.

Assemblers and other types of manual labour workers are becoming endangered species in many industries too. Simple processes and repetitive tasks are done mostly by machines and robotics, so human hands are no longer needed.

Though the prospects of a future job market seem quite predictable, there is some good news. Creative skills and human inspiration in art, science, business and medicine will never be replaced by the artificial intelligence of a computer, so many professions with these characteristics may seem safe for now!

  1. be substituted by more advanced ones,

  2. vanish in the course of time,

  3. become old-fashioned,

  4. be replaced by robotics.
