Christmas Kindness

Mary and Nick were an elderly couple with no children. They had been living in the village all their life. Everybody there knew them. They were always pleased to have some guests in their house. They had a small farm with a few farm animals to keep them stay afloat. Being farmers allowed them to sell some dairy products and made ends meet.

On Christmas Eve Mary as usual was preparing their house for a festive dinner. Certainly, their table was hard to call the festive but traditional roasted turkey and a nice Christmas cake were always there. She put on some Christmas stockings on the bed as they didn't possess any fireplaces. Nick helped her to decorate the Christmas tree with some baubles and a door with a wreath.

Mary and Nick were supposed to celebrate alone listening to their favourite music and watching old films on TV. They liked the holiday but a sad feeling was always there. Especially, at Christmas, they were thinking about a big friendly supportive family. Among relatives, they only had a niece who never showed up. While their neighbours were having fun, singing, and dancing, Mary and Nick were enjoying themselves.

That day something had happened which changed their life forever. The fire started in the middle of the night breaking the silence. Mary and Nick were frightened as they had understood that they were too old to put out the fire. They tried to keep animals safe, first of all.

Suddenly, they heard that people from their neighbourhood were coming with some water and sand. The fire station was far away in the city centre. It took firemen about two hours to get to the village. However, the villagers beat the odds themselves. Mary and Nick were relieved and thankful. But the celebration was interrupted as they had to restore some burnt buildings.

The next morning, local people began coming. They offered their help. The elderly couple didn't understand why they deserved this attitude. One by one neighbours told their stories and how Mary and Nick helped them once. Tim, a young student, was grateful for Mary's help when he was studying, and she explained to him some complicated Maths rules. John, a shop owner, said thanks because Mary and Nick once lent him some money to open a tiny supermarket.

Everybody had a story to share. And today was a perfect chance for them to thank Mary and Nick enough. The bar was restored. The roof was fixed. The fence was painted. Everything was as perfect as new. It looked as if no fire happened. It was an unforgettable experience for Mary and Nick.

It was getting dark when Mary invited neighbours to have dinner together. They were eating, drinking, and laughing. It maybe was the most cheerful Christmas in the village. Mary and Nick didn't feel alone anymore. Right now, they were determined that nor money neither social connection made you a good person but only good deeds and positive treatment to other people did.
