New Neighbours

We saw the lorry long before it reached us. It was
full of objects that we had never seen in our whole lives. We could notice something
bright and colorful. All of us wanted to have a look at those mysterious things
closer.
The vehicle advanced towards our house. It was moving
slowly, its metallic tyres
were dazzling us. Men, women and children lined the road expecting to see who
the driver was. To our greatest surprise it was a young woman! She was wearing
sunglasses and a white cap. She stopped the car to ask us if we knew anyone who
spoke English in the village.
My younger brother rushed closer to reply that it was
our father who spoke very good English as he was our school headmaster. The
other three occupants of the car had smiled and congratulated him for his good
English.
“Where did you learn English?” one of the men asked my
brother. He explained that English was my favourite subject at school.
They asked to take our pictures and we posed and posed
for the camera, shouting “Cheese! Cheese!”
They clicked and clicked in our direction and we laughed our hearts out. That
was the moment I still remember as one of the happiest in my childhood. And
when we saw what was in the back of the lorry, we couldn’t believe our eyes!
There were many things but we did not really know their names. Derrick was sure
he had seen a bicycle. Jack thought he had seen a TV set. I, myself, had spotted a big mirror. Later we found out those were our new neighbours.
