Mattie’s Luck

When I first met Mattie, he was exchanging baseball

cards with some of his pals. He was a quiet young fellow and not at all what I

had expected from a teen called the "Tiger Woods of Fishing" by the

editor of California Fishing last month just after he won the prestigious

under-sixteen title.

Mattie was pushed into fishing by his father, John,

when he was nine. He accompanied his father on numerous fishing trips. So he had

picked up most necessary tips and tricks by the time he tried it himself. And

it seemed to come naturally to him.

He often mentioned that he caught his first fish after

about four minutes of fishing. His father says he has a great technique,

enormous patience and, most importantly, a willingness to listen and learn.

His first fishing trophy was won at the age of ten. It

was a true professional rod. He was a Californian under-twelve champion the

following year. He was also the American under-thirteen champion but it was the

under-sixteen tournament success, against much older sportsmen, that gave him

the most satisfaction.

Mattie explained his success in a different way. ‘This

hat was bought for me in England,’ he says, handing it to me. ‘I’ve won three

tournaments wearing it. It seems it has more luck than my any other piece of

clothing’.
