    • There were no electric lights in Bible times and so the people had to use oil lamps. These were often like a saucer, sometimes with a top. The oil in the lamp was fed through a wick of flax, hemp, or peeled rush. Sometimes people left the lamp burning so that a fire could be lit at any time. The word candle in the Bible meant lamp.
    • The Israelites cured the skins of their animals and used the leather to make bottles. Travelers found leather bottles much more suitable for carrying than those made out of pottery, which were easily broken. A piece of leather spread on the ground served as a table. Leather was also made into sandals, girdles, tent coverings, quivers, and sword sheaths
    • Esau returned from the field one day to find his twin brother Jacob making a pot of lentil soup. Esau was so hungry that he traded his birthright for some of the soup. Lentils are the seeds of a small plant grown throughout Palestine for food. Lentils were brought to David when he hid from Saul east of the river Jordan.
    • Until Roman times the postal service was onlу for government letters. Ordinary people sent their letters by friendly travellers or merchants. Many people could not write and so they hired scribes to write their letters.
    • Hebrew women became skilled in weaving linen cloth from flax. But some of the best linen came from ancient Egypt. Red linen was considered a luxury and was called royal linen. The coat, turban, and girdle of the priests were made of fine linen.
