Happy Birthday to SMS

Short Message Service (SMS), also called texting, is celebrating its 25th

birthday. The first text message was sent in the UK shortly before Christmas in

1992. It was a British engineer who managed to send the first message from a

computer to a mobile phone. At that time mobile phones were possible to receive

messages, but not send them.

In 1994, Nokia presented its first mobile phone that could do both. It

was the first phone that could make more than just an audio signal. Later the

first commercial SMS service started in Finland. Text messages were limited to

160 signs.

Now texting has changed the way we communicate. Today you can send the

same text to different contacts at the same time and it doesn’t matter if the

recipient is on line or not. A new language has also emerged with abbreviations

and short sentences. Media experts regard texting as the first step towards

today’s smartphones, which are basically pocket computers with countless apps.

It’s almost impossible to predict how smart our smartphones will be in

the nearest future!
