The Great Sphinx of Giza
The Great Sphinx of Giza is a world-famous sculpture. It is located on the Giza Plateau. Giza is an Egyptian city on the west bank of the Nile River. Apart from the Sphinx, the area houses several cultural sites such as the pyramids of some pharaohs. The Sphinx is considered one of the symbols of Egypt together with the famous Pyramids. The Great Sphinx is located southeast of the Great Pyramid of Khufu.
The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the largest statues in the world. It is about 240 feet (73 metres) long and 66 feet (20 metres) high. The statue has the body and paws of a lion and the face of a human. Most historians believe the statue was built under the reign of King Khafre and that the face of the statue is his face. However, some historians believe that it was built by Khafre's brother in memory of their father, King Khufu. Another viewpoint is that it was built by Khufu himself. The statue was carved from great limestone rock. It is still unknown what the Sphinx was originally built for and what its function was. Maybe, the Sphinx was made to connect dead pharaohs with the sun god, but we don't know for sure.
Time does not spare the Great Sphinx. The statue's body has suffered great erosion over the centuries, and its face has also been damaged significantly. In about 1400 BC, the first attempts of its restoration were made by Thutmose IV. The front paws of the Sphinx were dug out. The restoration process was continued by Ramesses II between 1279 and 1213 BC. The Sphinx was entirely dug out in modern times, at the beginning of the 20th century, and its head was restored. However, the erosion process is still going on nowadays.
