In school, the teacher [spending|spends|is spending] half of the class period lecturing, and then tells you your homework assignment and gives you the rest of the class period to start it. If you hurry, you might be able to finish it in class. Generally, the material in the teacher’s lectures is much the same as the information in the textbook, and the most important facts are repeated several times. The teacher will often say, “This will be on the test, so remember it!”

At the university, the professor tells you which unique and important textbooks to buy, and then perhaps never [mention|mentioning|mentions] them again. The professor doesn’t tell you which pages to read for the next class [meeting|meets|meet], and doesn’t generally assign homework, except maybe to tell you that a term paper will be collected on the last day of class. You are expected to read the textbooks and get to work on any long-term assignments. You are an adult; you can handle this yourself. Everything [depending|depend |depends] on you. Of course, the material in the textbook will be included in the final exam, even if the professor never refers to any of it during the semester.
