Same, similar and alike
We use the words same, similar and alike to compare things.

The same means that two or more things are exactly like one another.

She wore the same dress as I did.

If two or more things are not entirely the same, we call them similar.

I have a similar problem with my neighbours.

Alike as an adjective means "the same" or "similar" and is used with the verbs "be", "seem", "look".

All clothes shops look alike, you can't find anything different there.

Yesterday I went to my friend's party. The weather was [the same|similar|alike]as it was a week ago: it was raining heavily. So, my friends arranged a party at home. Colin, my best friend, whose character was [the same|similar|alike]to mine as we both like parties, decided to invite his old friends, Max and Kevin.

When I looked at them, I was astonished! They looked [same|similar|alike]:I couldn't figure out who Kevin was and who Max was. They are both with dark hair and blue eyes, [the same|similar|alike]as I am! Besides, they were wearing [the same|similar|alike]clothes: red T-shirts and beige trousers, so it was too difficult to tell the difference. Their T-shirts were very [the same|similar|alike]to mine, but I had a red T-shirt with black dots. So, if a stranger could have looked at us that evening, he would have said we had been all [same|similar|alike]in appearance!
