Theory Box: Reviews

A review is a [short|long]description of a book, film, concert or TV programme.

Reviews give information about what is reviewed and recommendations if the book, film, concert or a TV programme is worth spending time on. Mostly, reviews are found in newspapers or magazines.

The [style|plot]of a review can be formal, informal or semi-formal depending on where the review is published or who is going to read it.

A good review usually includes:

  1. [An introduction|A beginning]
which gives the background information of the book, film, CD, for example, the title, the director's name, type or setting.
  2. [An important body|A main body]
with 2 paragraphs where the first one gives the summary of the plot with events in chronological order and the second dealing with general comments about the plot, the main characters, the acting, etc.
  3. [A closing|A conclusion]
which gives recommendations of the author if it is worth seeing/reading/listening with examples.

The characteristic features of this type of writing are the usage of [present|past]tenses and a variety of adjectives which make the review more vivid and precise.
