Roger, how did you discover that humpback whalesactually sing to each other?
- Well, I was in Bermuda when I happened to meetFrank Watlington, who had recorded some strangenoises on his underwater microphones.
- Did you realise what he had recorded?
- Not at first, but after I had studied the recordingscarefully, I realised that the noises were actually thewhales singing to each other.
- And I understand that you released a recording ofthese haunting songs.
- Yes, and it was very popular with the public. With the money that sales of the recording raised the‘Save the Whale’ movement was begun.
- Which, I understand, helped to bring an end to commercial whaling?
- Thankfully, yes. However, the whales are now under threat from pollution in the oceans.
- Well, Roger, you’ll have to come back to talk about that on another show. Thank you for now.
