Read three texts about the achievements of Russian regions in agriculture and answer the questions below.
The Kabardino-Balkarian Republic
In 2023, more than 700,000 tons of fruit and berries were harvested in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic in Russia. This is an absolute record for Kabardino-Balkaria. In 2022, only 680,000 tons of fruit and berries were harvested.
A few years ago, Kabardino-Balkaria stopped buying fruit and berries in other regions and started supplying around half a million tons of fruit and berries to different regions of Russia as part of import substitution.
The Lipetsk region
In the first part of 2024, the Lipetsk region in Russia was among the regions that were considered leaders in the production of tomatoes along with the Stavropol, Krasnodar, Moscow, and Kaluga regions. More than 45% of production was grown in these regions in 2023. By the end of 2023, 70,000 tons of tomatoes were harvested in the Lipetsk region. And in only the first half of 2024, 41,000 tons of tomatoes were harvested there.
The Saratov region
At the end of 2023, 152,000 tons of potatoes were harvested in the Saratov region in Russia. Compared to 2022, potato production increased by 24%. One of the reasons for this increase is the increase in soil fertility due to the use of mineral fertilisers. Another important reason is effective measures to support agricultural producers as part of the Development of Vegetable and Potato Cultivation federal project.
