    • The UN holds electronics manufacturers partly responsible for this growing crisis, accusing them of failing to manage the end-of-life disposal of their products. Many companies are not ensuring that their devices are recycled or disposed of safely, exacerbating the environmental and health impacts of e-waste globally.
    • C. The disposal of e-waste is not just an environmental issue but also a public health concern. Toxic substances from discarded electronics are leaching into rivers and oceans, poisoning water systems and ecosystems. In 2022 alone, 58 tons of mercury entered the environment, some of which contaminated the food chain, posing even greater risks to human health and biodiversity.
    • Consumers also play a significant role in the e-waste issue. The ease of purchasing electronics online, where it takes only a few clicks to buy new gadgets, contrasts with the challenges of properly disposing of old devices. Many people are unaware of how to dispose of their electronics safely, leading to further accumulation of e-waste. The UN’s message highlights the urgent need for greater responsibility from both manufacturers and consumers to address this mounting problem.
    • B. Most of the e-waste produced comes from developed nations, which frequently export it to poorer countries for recycling. However, these developing nations often lack the infrastructure to recycle electronics in a way that minimizes environmental harm. The improper recycling processes in these countries are contributing to severe environmental degradation, causing pollution and posing significant health risks.
    • А. The United Nations \(UN\) has issued a serious warning to global consumers about the rising levels of electronic waste \(e\-waste\), which are contributing to an "environmental catastrophe." E-waste includes any device with a plug or battery, such as cell phones, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners. Many of these devices contain toxic chemicals like lead and mercury. In 2022, the world generated 62 million tons of e-waste, a volume that CNN illustrated as enough to fill over 1.5 million 40-ton trucks, capable of encircling the Earth at the Equator.
