Peter the Great (1672 — 1725) is probably the most famous of all the Russian tsars. He was born Pyotr Alekseyevich on June 9, 1672, in Moscow, Russia. Peter the Great was the 14th child of Tzar Alexey. Even as a boy, the youngest son of Tsar Alexey was naturally curious and drawn to learning receiving his education not only from palace tutors. Peter proved a healthy child, lively and inquisitive.

Under his rule, Russia changed from being a poor farming society into an empire as strong as the other European powers. Peter toured Europe, sometimes in disguise to avoid being recognised, and learned about western culture and science. Returning to Russia, he made changes to his army and government to make Russia more like Europe, especially Germany. He spent much of his time fighting wars, first against the Ottoman Empire and then against Sweden.

He founded St. Petersburg, his most lasting contribution to Russia, on some land he conquered along the Baltic Sea. A gateway to Europe, St. Petersburg became the new capital of his kingdom. Today, St. Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and a major tourist destination. Peter the Great accomplished many positive things in Moscow before relocating the Russian capital to St. Petersburg acquainting local residents with the Baroque architectural style.

In 1725, after bravely trying to rescue some drowning sailors, he ended up with a bad cold and died a short time later. Peter the Great died in St. Petersburg in his small Winter Palace on the banks of the Winter Canal. He was the first Tsar to be buried in the Imperial crypt in the Peter and Paul Cathedral.
