Imagine that you are an editor of your school social media site and your classmates have participated in the survey “Is studying history necessary?”. You need to summarize the results for the post. Read the texts and arrange the opinions into two categories: NECESSARY/UNNECESSARY.
NECESSARY
UNNECESSARY
Mia: "I'm in defence of history in general. Sometimes it can be interesting and enlightening, but sometimes it feels like a chore. I guess it depends on the teacher and how it's presented. I remember one time when we went on a field trip to the battlefield of Borodino and it really brought the subject to life for me."
Olivia: "I'm not sure if history is worth studying. On the one hand, it's interesting to learn about different time periods and cultures. But also, sometimes it feels like I'm just memorizing dates and names without really understanding why it matters."
Vera: "I think history is really pointless. We can just Google everything we need to know about the past. My dad made me memorize all the tsars once, and I've never used that information in my life."
Tim: "I believe history is crucial for understanding who we are as a society and where we come from. Learning about the past helps us avoid making the same mistakes and gives us a sense of identity and pride in our heritage. For example, I've always been fascinated by ancient Egyptian culture and I love sharing my knowledge with others."
Emily: "Well, studying history is so important! How can we understand the world today without knowing what our ancestors went through? Everything that's happening now is connected to events that happened before. If you don't know history, you're doomed to repeat it. Plus, history is full of drama and scandal. It's like watching a soap opera but with real people!"
