In modern society, there is a computer and the Internet in almost every home. Most computer users can no longer imagine their life without the Internet. It gives us enormous possibilities for work, education, entertainment, communication, self-development, looking for and sharing information. However, does that matter if we start to 'lose ourselves'?

Overuse of the Internet causes Internet addiction that leads to the situation when people actually begin to give up their 'real' life, spending almost all their time in virtual reality.

A new term 'Netaholic' turned up in the medicine these days. There are three types of netaholics which can be addicted to and suffer from:

  • Internet relationship and online dating;
  • gambling;
  • information overload.

People of the first type, who are addicted to chats, instant messaging services or social networks, are extremely involved in online relationships where they can pretend to be anyone they want.

Dependence on online games, gambling, and online auctions has also become a serious mental health problem. With the easy access to virtual casinos, interactive games, and online auctions, addicted people spend and lose big amounts of money, ignore their work, duties or significant relationships.

The third type of netaholics is characterized by uncontrolled Internet surfing and looking for information on databases. People spend much of their time searching, structuring and saving the information which, in most cases, they might not even use.

So, ask yourself: "Am I a netaholic or can I live without the Internet for at least several hours?"
