Anna of Russia
Anna Ioannovna was the Empress of Russia from 1730 to 1740.
Anna was born in Moscow as the daughter of Tsar Ivan V. Anna’s father was Tsar of Russia and ruled with his half-brother Peter I, but he was ill and had very little influence. Ivan V died in February 1696, when Anna was only three years old, and her uncle Peter I became the only ruler of Russia. Although Anna was the fourth child, she had only one surviving elder sister, Catherine, and one younger sister, Praskovya.
Her uncle Peter the Great ordered the family to move from Moscow to St Petersburg. Anna really liked the new capital of the Russian Empire.
In 1710, Peter the Great organised the marriage of the 17-year-old Anna and Frederick William, Duke of Courland. He was the same age as her. Her wedding celebrations were very big. The couple spent several weeks in Russia and then went to Courland, but Duke Frederick died on the way.
After her husband died, Anna proceeded to Jelgava, the capital of Courland and ruled that province for almost twenty years, from 1711 to 1730.
In 1730, Tsar Peter II \(grandson of Anna’s uncle Peter the Great\) died at a young age. He had no children. That’s why Anna became the new Empress. She ruled Russia for 10 years and became an important part of Russia’s rich history. But she had no children and when she died it led to some problems.
