Halloween comes from the old Celtic festival. The Celts celebrated their new year on 1st November. This day was the end of summer and beginning of winter. Winters were cold and dark, so Celts believed that on Halloween night the ghosts came to Earth. They helped to predict the future. The natural world was dangerous, it changed quickly and it was important to know about their life in the next year.
On the 1st November, the Celts built big bonfires and burnt crops. It was a giftto the Celtic gods. During the celebration, the Celts wore animal costumes. They sang, danced and told each other stories. Then, they went home, lit their fires and hoped for luck.
The first Halloween in America was similar to the Celtics'. Neighbours celebrated the harvest and told stories of the dead. They also sang and danced. In the second half of the 19th century, a lot of immigrants arrived in America. They made Halloween a popular national event. Americans began to wear scary costumes and go from house to house. The most popular characters were witches, ghosts, and vampires. They asked for food or money with the question "Trick or treat?"
