Different teens face many problems. Some of them can be very stressful. In the short term, stress can be motivating. It can push a child to study or to practice for exams, but chronic stress is different.
Long-term stress can cause a lot of different health and mental problems. It can weaken the immune system and contribute to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Stress at a young age doesn't always look like stress in adults. But like adults, teens can find healthy ways to cope with it. It's very important to spot the signs of excess stress and manage it with the right tools.
For young children and teens, stress sources can be very different. New school, new friends, bullying, bad marks, a lot of homework, moving to a new house or town—all these can be a reason for stress.
How can you understand that you are under a lot of stress? There are some common signs. The first one is irritability or anger: stressed-out kids and teens might be more short-tempered or argumentative than normal. The second sign is trouble with sleep. If you are stressed, you may suffer from insomnia or, on the contrary, sleep a lot. The third sign is changing your eating habits. Eating too much or too little can both be a reaction to stress. There are also a few more signs helping us to understand if we are under stress.
What should you do to manage stress? First of all, try to sleep well. It will be wonderful if you sleep from 8 to 10 hours a day. Sleep needs to be in priority to check the stress.
Also, it will be good for you if you start doing sports. Physical activity is an essential stress reliever for people of all ages.
Try to talk it out. Talking about stressful situations with a trustworthy adult can help you to go through them without great consequences.
