Halloween is very popular in Great Britain, in America and now in all Europe.

Halloween goes back to the customs and traditions of the Celts, who lived between Ireland and Northern France about 2000 years ago. Nowadays people celebrate Halloween on the 31st of October. They dress up as witches, ghosts, skeletons, black cats, vampires, pumpkins and goblins. You can buy a costume at a shop or you can make your own costume at home. For example, it’s easy to make a ghost costume from an old white sheet or wear black clothes to look like a witch.

Halloween main colours are orange and black.

Another symbol of this joyful holiday is Jack-o'-Lantern. This is a pumpkin (an orange, football-sized vegetable) with a nose, eyes and mouth carved into one of its sides. People put a candle inside the empty pumpkin and the light creates a scary face effect. It’s interesting to know that in the past people used turnips to make lanterns but nowadays pumpkins are more popular. People use pumpkin lanterns to decorate their houses at Halloween.

At Halloween little boys and girls like to play apple bobbing (you must pick up apples with your mouth from water). There is also a traditional game “Trick-or-Treat”. Children dress scary costumes, go from house to house, knock at the door and say “Trick-or-Treat”. If they get a treat (sweets, gum or cookies), they go away. If they don’t get a treat, they play a trick.
