General characteristics of the giant planets

All these planets (Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and especially Jupiter!) are large in size and mass. The giant planets are distinguished by a large number of satellites; they have been found to date in Jupiter — 16, Saturn — 17, Uranus — 16 and only Neptune — 8. A remarkable feature of the giant planets are rings that are open not only for Saturn, but also for Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune. Of the giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn are the best studied. The most important feature of the structure of giant planets is that these planets do not have hard surfaces. They are composed mainly of light gaseous elements — hydrogen and helium.
