How to reach an agreement

Negotiation is the fine art of finding a solution to an impossible situation. One of the best-known negotiating methods I come [for|up|across|about] is "principled negotiation". Let's break down this strategy and apply it to real life. Think about a complex situation — arguing [for|with|over|about] your salary with your boss or pocket money with your parents — and try to apply the following principles to the situation.

  1. Thing, not person: do not be distracted by whether you are close [about|for|to|into] the other person or not, whether you like the person or not.

  2. Similarities, not differences. Think about the following questions: what does the other person need from me? Do we have common interests?

  3. Good enough, not perfect: you should not be aiming for the maximum possible. So, alongside your desired outcome to the negotiation, come [over|up|down|for] with a Plan B prepared before negotiations even start.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to negotiation: the first one believes that you have to negotiate "hard" and "conquer" the other side; the other recommends negotiating "softly" in order not to put a strain on the relationship. "Principled negotiation" falls into the second camp and recommends cooperative negotiation. Negotiating properly means that everyone gets more than they originally hoped for and won't be ashamed [of|for|with|about] something in the future.
