Everybody knows the kangaroo. They carry their young in a pouch. Kangaroos can jump more than four metres and travel at seventy kilometres per hour. They eat grass and leaves and live in small groups. Koalas are marsupials. This means that they are mammals that carry their young in a pouch. They look like cute bears, but koalas are definitely not bears! They eat eucalyptus leaves and drink little or no water at all. The echidna and the platypus are the only mammals that lay eggs. The Australian emu is a flightless bird. Australia is full of surprises.
