There are a lot of different names for it: Internet crime, cyber crime, e-crime and hi-tech crime, but it all [adds|totals|amounts|sums] to the same thing – crimes committed online. Internet crime is a serious problem which has severe consequences in [two|either|neither|both] human and economic terms and worryingly it is on the [increase|advance|upturn|top]. According to the Association for Payment Clearing Services, in 2004, card fraud over the Internet cost the UK £117 million. Furthermore, the [contact|impression|impact|influence] on UK business during the same period included virus attacks costing £27.8 million, as well as financial fraud costing £121 million. The good news is that every police force in the UK now has its own computer crime unit. Crime-specific initiatives have also been introduced to [battle|attack|hit|combat] particular crimes. For example, there is now a Centre for Child Protection on the Internet which not only [works|does|conducts|carries] investigations but also provides support for victims and information for parents. In terms of Internet fraud, viruses and hacking, there have been [acute|intensive|extreme|severe] efforts to educate consumers and businesses on how to protect themselves. Finally, it is now illegal for firms in the UK to send unsolicited messages to personal email accounts or to hide the identity of the sender.
